Stephen Walli on Hyperic Business Model

Stephen Walli, of Optaros, has taken a liking to Hyperic lately. After meeting him at OSCON and then running into him again at LinuxWorld, it was interesting to listen to him talk about how cool Hyperic is. And now he’s blogging about us. Basically, the main thrust is thus…

- Hyperic wants community-contributed plugins, and so has created a GPL’d plugin dev kit as well as an easy-to-learn XML format to create plugins. Lower the bar to entry

- Sysadmins like to dig through stuff, and the GPL’d Hyperic HQ gives them that.

- Sysadmins, with access to the software innards, can help harden HQ in a variety of environment. I’m happy to say that this is already happening.

- Tightly integrated suite of software makes it easier to build a community – as opposed to “frankenstein” software

- Make the free stuff useful. No crippleware, please. The key to more users is usability. Hyperic gets this.

Gosh, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks, Stephen!
