John Mark has written an article investigating the reality of the benefits received when releasing software as open source, especially as it pertains to the crowded IT software market. The fundamental question: can you get the same benefits without actually releasing open source software?

Dana was kind enough to interview Javier Soltero, Hyperic CEO, about how the open source conversion has gone at Hyperic. A few thousand downloads later, it’s going swimmingly. Javier notes that “Open source is no panacea” – the product must be solid, and that open source, by itself, doesn’t solve underlying problems with the software.
