Opening Move with Scott Mace, a series of podcasts on the Open Source Conversations channel, has just posted a podcast with Javier, “From Proprietary to Open Source“. It’s a wide-ranging discussion about Hyperic’s decision to release software under the GPL, why we chose the GPL, and with whom we compete.

On the competitive landscape, Javier notes that Hyperic HQ is more complementary than competitive with the “Big 4″, substantially different from Microsoft Mon, and co-exists pretty easily with projects like Nagios. HQ was built to co-exist with the current IT landscape and all of the various tools that may be already deployed in a given environment. HQ is basically the “Switzerland” of systems management.

Javier also notes Hyperic’s focus on web infrastructure management and how that is a key differentiator.
