Javier Soltero: It’s All About the “E”
In yesterday’s post about the ITManagement.com interview with Javier, you may have noticed this bit:
“Sure. [picks up a pen and draws what looks like a capital "E"] Every product has a unique management interface that we’ll represent by this figure. The deeper the grooves, the more manageable the software, and the more closely your management software aligns with those grooves, the smoother the interaction. Now consider HP Openview. It fits something like this [draws a square that slightly overlaps with the "E" grooves]. The management or monitoring tool is trying to force a mechanism onto the managed product. None of these guys built their products with the assumption that they couldn’t assume anything. With Hyperic, it actually looks more like this [draws a rectangle with attached teeth that fit within the "E"].
Now, without further ado, here is the aforementioned “E”:
Ex. 1 – “E” represents software with interfaces for management:

Ex. 2: “E” is half-covered by other management software:

Ex. 3: “E” gets the full coverage by HQ:

Next time you see Javier, ask him to draw the E for you ;)
