Jack Loftus Writes About mynewplace.com

Jack Loftus of SearchEnterpriseLinux has written an article about mynewplace.com’s experience monitoring Resin-based apps with Nagios and the search for systems management software with better Resin support. They didn’t want to pay the license fees for Openview, and it’s important to note that Openview would not have supported their Resin deployment without significant customization. In [...]

Charles Lee on Hibernate and MySQL (theserverside.com)

Charles Lee posted an article on theserverside.com on the flexibility afforded us by our migration to Hibernate. In our case, it was the first step towards MySQL compatibility, and we wonder how many other enterprise developers have used it for similar purposes. Or course, the overall benefits of Hibernate go far beyond MySQL compatibility, but [...]

Open Source 1997 vs. Open Source 2007

I just got off the phone with Jack Loftus, of TechTarget, and he was asking me some very pointed and insightful questions on open source business models. I’m sure he felt my enthusiasm on the subject as I highlighted some of the antiquated theories of what makes a good Open Source company and good Open [...]

Price Per Ounce: Normalizing the Download Counter

Two things happened today that got me thinking. One, I read Alex Fletcher’s blog post on Open Source and the Numbers Game and two, I went grocery shopping (you’ll see how they’re related in a minute). As I was wondering the aisles trying to remember what I was there to buy, it occurred to me [...]

The Real Measure of Software Success

There’s a lot of buzz around these days about what makes or breaks open source. Nat Torkington recently blogged about Is “Open Source” Completely Meaningless?. He asks a good question when asking for feedback on the future direction of OSCON. The recent Open Solutions Alliance (OSA) announcement has had a number of folks wallowing in [...]

LinuxWorld New York

Blogging with a loaned nokia n800. LinuxWorld NY has been a hit. Our booth has been swamped, hq’s 3.0 release has been enthusiastically received, and the OSA announcement generated plenty of interest. This conference has been a win-win-win. I’ll post a news round-up later – quite a few news outlets covered our releases.

InformationWeek: How To Tell The Open Source Winners From The Losers

Charles Babcock has written an interesting article discussing how to project an open source project’s success or failure. There’s also a nice bit about the role of user communities, which includes a quote from Javier: Many think of an open source “community” as a passel of unpaid developers who code because they love it, but [...]

Like OpenView, but Cheaper – No Thanks!

Our friend, Michael Cote’, mused a couple weeks ago about the idea of the “little 4″ going up against the “big 4″ in systems management, the newly anointed “little 4” includes Zenoss, Groundwork, Qlusters and Hyperic, of which I am the CEO. It was amusing when Cote’ put this together, aiming at a new class [...]

Three Cheers for the Linux Foundation

We were happy to hear of the recent merger between the Free Standards Group and OSDL. The newly minted organization, the Linux Foundation, was a necessary development, as there was duplication of effort among both groups. As they say, two heads are better than one… but not when they’re setting out to accomplish the same [...]

More Coverage on Hyperic HQ for VMware

I woke up this morning to discover even more coverage of our HQ for VMware piece from earlier this week. LinuxToday posted a blurb on the NetworkWorld article by Denise Dubie. Even better, Cate at ITManagement.com posted a nice writeup on our VMware management saying “Hyperic is ahead of its time.“

Doug’s VM Article Arrives on theserverside.com

Doug MacEachern, our CTO and the founder of mod_perl, has posted an insightful article on TheServerSide.com about how we use virtualization in our dev environment. Hyperic and the Java Open Review Project

You may recall that we engaged with Fortify Software to do a full code audit of Hyperic HQ. Now, Fortify and the FindBugs project have teamed up on a new initiative, the Java Open Review Project. We’re proud to have Hyperic HQ as one of the charter open source projects. This is all about making [...]

The LISA Conference – My Favorite Time of the Year

The USENIX LISA Conference convenes once again this week, this time in Washington, DC. I always enjoy this conference – those in attendance are top notch sysadmins and IT gurus. This will mark my 3rd time at LISA, and my first in a non-west coast setting (it rotates between eastern and western US venues). Hyperic [...]

The Monolithic Stack is Dead – Long Live the Mix-and-match Stack

As Oracle OpenWorld is now underway, our thoughts at Hyperic have recently turned to the idea of software “stacks”. An unfortunate development has taken place in the world of open source software: stack-mania. Some software vendors are trying to push on customers a monolithic, one-size-fits-all “stack,” usually consisting of a single operating system and a [...]

Neil McAllister at InfoWorld: BEA, Open Source, and Enterprise Management

Neil McAllister, editor extraordinaire at InfoWorld, gives BEA a tongue-lashing (keyboard-lashing?) for recent statements by Rob Levy, BEA CTO. Although I have to admit, I don’t see what the story is here. Here is another traditional proprietary company suddenly realizing that it’s market is collapsing beneath them, and then they lash out at open source [...]

Hyperic and Commoditization of Systems Management

Phil Wainright has written a post on his blog at ZDNet about the “commoditization of systems management.” Phil’s blog focuses on SaaS, so that’s his perspective when he discusses being able to manage systems from afar without the need for an agent (Hyperic HQ uses an agent-server architecture). There are a couple of points he [...]
